Abstract

In 2010, the American Seismic Survey calculated that the eastern Mediterranean region contains huge untapped natural resources, including around 122 trillion cubic meters of gas and approximately 1.7 billion barrels of crude oil. This information generated the first spark of feverish exploration activity for the countries of the region, in which Israel announced the exploration of the Tamar and Leviathan gas fields in 2009 and 2010, and Egypt followed suit with the discovery of the giant Dhohr field in 2015. This exploratory competition elicited a variety of regional emotions, including welcoming. With the exploration of these fields serving as the foundation of regional cooperation among Eastern Mediterranean countries, international conflicts are expected to flare up, influence will shift, and maritime borders will be demarcated.
